This week in L.A. students wrote their summary (independently) after reading a story.  They were very well done!    We started practicing a new skill--questioning.  Good readers ask questions before reading, during reading, and after reading.  While we question, we also begin to predict and infer.  I modelled this while reading a really neat picture booked called "Shark Lady."  Students practiced questioning on their own while reading (and hearing) a non-fiction piece called "Polar Bear Problems."  Speaking of polar bears!  Did you know that polar bear fur is NOT white?  It is transparent!  We watched a video (link below) featuring some cool polar bear facts.  These facts relate to our "Light and Shadows" Science unit and it will lead us into our new Science unit "Waste and our World."  Polar bears will also be the feature of our bulletin board outside our classroom.  I will post pictures next week as we put it up. https://www.youtube.com/watch

Food Drive and Loonies for Lunches!

With the holiday season soon approaching, it is important to care for others and give back to those who are less fortunate than us.  This holiday season, Beddington Heights School will be a part of 2 programs that the city of Calgary runs for those less fortunate. The first program is Loonies for Lunches .   Loonies for Lunches would bring students together to collect loonies to donate to the food bank. Each school and/or classroom would create a donation box to collect the loonies and perhaps have some healthy competition to see which class could raise the most. The loonies would then be used   by the Food Bank to   purchase food for our Weekends and More program that makes sure kids get the nutritious food they need on the weekends to stay healthy and learning.   The Mayor's Food Drive is where we collect non-perishable items, i.e. can goods, sealed boxed items, for Calgary's Food Bank.  Both programs start this coming Monday November 22 and run to Dec 14th .  For more infor

Sorry for the delay!  Mrs. Karr has been sick.  : ( This week in L.A. we have been working on summaries of stories.  We read several stories we were familiar with (and unfamiliar with) and together we wrote summaries.  We wrote 2-3 sentences about what happened in First, Next, Then, and Last.   In Social Studies, we have started a group project!  Students have been put into one of 6 groups to research more about the regions of Alberta--Boreal Forest, Grassland, Parkland, Canadian Shield, Rocky Mountains, and Foothills.  Each group will make a large poster to display information about their region including--its landforms, climate, plants, animals, resources, and jobs. In Science, we continued to read about white light and how our eyes "see" colour.  We also watched an awesome video on Aurora Borealis (or the Northern Lights)!   In Math, we have been working on adding 3 digit numbers with re-grouping.  We started with using base ten blocks to model two numbers then physica

This morning we had a virtual Remembrance Day assembly.  Our class is awesome at singing "Highway of Heroes!"  Here is a photo of our class wreath and all the other class wreaths.  On the Wonder Wall is also some of our classmate's Art (the soldier picture).    This morning we learned a new Math game.  Students played Snowball 100 (mild), Snowball 200 (medium), or Snowball 300 (spicy).  The game practiced our addition and subtraction skills. This afternoon, students had Phys Ed with me.  Our bumping and setting skills are coming along! This week we have been discussing courage which is our virtue this month.  The soldiers showed courage, but we can also have courage and show it in our everyday life.  This week we did writing in L.A. about courage.  Students wrote a reflection, a story, or an acrostic poem about courage. No school tomorrow (Thursday November 11) or Friday.  Have a wonderful long weekend!

Lots of Science this week!  We explored reflection with smooth tin foil, and then crumpled up and smoothed out tin foil.  We learned that refraction is the bending of light.  When we put a pencil in a cup of water, the pencil looked bent or broken.  Later in the week we made rainbows!  We did an experiment and learned that white light is made up of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.   This week in Social Studies we did an Alberta mini research activity.  We explored Alberta parks, landmarks, cities, and much more.  We found out that Alberta's provincial flower is the wild rose.   During Art, we did a guided drawing of the wild rose.  Here are three examples.  They are all unique and beautiful!
